Important Safety Advisory Sensepoint XCL and Sensepoint XRL

12/20/2017

Regions affected:  Global

To all Sensepoint XCL and XRL fixed gas detector customers. The purpose of this message is to alert you to a product safety issue Honeywell has discovered that could affect our new Sensepoint XCL and XRL fixed gas detectors, which are used to detect a range of flammable and toxic gases in commercial and light industrial applications.

As part of our quality testing of these products we discovered a firmware issue that could cause the device to fail to detect the presence of gas or fail to communicate the presence of gas, in addition to other potential operational abnormalities. Honeywell has isolated the cause to one of the device’s internal software-based counters, which affects all of the operations of the device. The result is that there is a potential every 50 days (based upon this software cycle), that a software conflict causes some of the device’s operations to freeze in a static state, rendering it unable to function properly. All of the affected detectors have been sold by Honeywell from 1st May 2017 to 13th December 2017.

The detectors affected by this can be identified in a number of ways:

  • The detector will carry the serial number in the following ranges
  • - (Sensepoint XCL) K0193717170001 through K0193717490055
    - (Sensepoint XRL) K0194917395001 through K0195017495068
  • The Mod State of the detector will be Mod 0 (i.e. none of the Mod State boxes will be marked on the Mod State table as found on the detector certification label)
  •  The detector firmware version number will be v0.15-6. The firmware version can be viewed using the Sensepoint App. Connect to the detector and go to Settings>Firmware Details

If you have an affected detector, we are directing all Sensepoint XCL and Sensepoint XRL customers to take the following steps immediately to reset their devices, which will ensure the detectors will function in accordance with specification until the replacement program is conducted. To reset a Sensepoint XCL or Sensepoint XRL device:

1. Remove and re-apply power to the gas detector
2. Allow the gas detector to complete its warm-up sequence
3. Check for correct operation of the gas detector using a gas bump check
4. Repeat this process every 30 days or less until such time as the detector is replaced.

We are currently implementing a software fix in new production that corrects the problem. Once this is complete we will undertake a field replacement program for Sensepoint XCL and Sensepoint XRL devices. This will involve the replacement, at the customer’s choice, of either the complete detector or the front electronics assembly (Sensepoint XCL). We will share more details about the replacement program shortly.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and we will strive to ensure that we work with you to effect the replacement in a manner that is least disruptive to your business.
